Privacy in one paragraph

Glassback is built so there is almost nothing to have a policy about. The website sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads nothing from third parties. The model lookup runs inside your browser and what you type never leaves it. The app scans your own Wi-Fi from your phone and sends nothing anywhere, unless you type your email into its waitlist. The only personal information we ever hold is an email address you choose to give us for the waitlist, and where you found us when you gave it.

The website

We do not use cookies, tracking pixels, fingerprinting, analytics services, advertising networks, embedded social widgets, or third-party fonts. Every file the site loads comes from our own address.

The model number lookup is computed in your browser using a catalog that is part of the page. It is not sent to us or to anyone else. If you share a lookup link, the model number is in the link you chose to share.

Our hosting provider keeps standard, short-lived server logs (such as the requesting IP address, the page requested, and the time) to run and secure the service. We do not use those logs to identify or profile visitors.

The app

The app discovers TVs and other devices on the Wi-Fi network your phone is connected to, using the same announcements those devices already broadcast to every device on the network. It reads what they announce (names, model identifiers, software versions) and compares that to a catalog stored inside the app.

The scan happens on your phone. No device information, network information, scan results, or usage data are transmitted to us or to any third party. There are no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting that includes personal data, and no advertising.

On iOS the app asks for Local Network permission. It is used only to discover devices on your network. On Android the app uses network discovery permissions for the same purpose. If you deny permission, the scan cannot run, but the model lookup still works.

Scan results are kept on your device only for as long as the app is open unless you choose to save them. Deleting the app deletes everything.

The waitlist

If you join the waitlist, we store the email address you enter, the date, whether it came from the website or the app, the page you first arrived on, and, if you arrived through a link that carried campaign tags or an ad click identifier, those tags. That last part tells us which posts and ads brought people in. We do not store your IP address.

To do that without cookies, the website keeps the first page of your visit and its tags in your browser tab's session storage. It is deleted when you close the tab and is only sent to us if you sign up.

We send one short welcome email when you join, then a small number of emails about the Box: when it is available, and material changes to it. Nothing else.

We do not sell, rent, or share the list with anyone, and we do not combine it with any other data. Two service providers handle it for us and may use it for nothing else: Railway hosts the database it is stored in, and Resend delivers the emails. Every email includes a one-click way to be removed. You can also write to us at the address below and we will delete your entry.

Children

The website and app are not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. The waitlist is for adults.

Changes and contact

This policy is effective 21 September 2026. If it changes, the new version and its date appear on this page. Questions and deletion requests: hello@glassback.app.

What this is

Glassback provides information about how smart TVs and streaming devices collect viewing data, tools to identify those devices, and instructions for changing their settings. Using the website or the app means you accept these terms.

Information, not a guarantee

Verdicts, menu paths, setting names, caveats, and server lists are compiled from manufacturer documentation, regulatory filings and settlements, published research, journalism, and our own testing. We work to keep them accurate and current, and we say how confident we are for each platform.

Manufacturers change menus, names, and behaviour with firmware updates, and settings can differ by region, model year, and retailer. A menu path that was right yesterday can be wrong today. Follow the newest path listed for your set, and check the result yourself.

Turning a setting off reduces the data a device collects. It does not guarantee that a device collects nothing, that a setting will stay off after an update, or that every server a device contacts is blocked. Where we know of limits, we list them under caveats.

Nothing here is legal advice, and nothing here is a statement about any individual's intent. Where we quote a company or a person, we quote their public words, say where they were said, and link to the source.

Acceptable use

The app is for networks you own or are authorised to use. Do not use it to scan networks that are not yours. Do not use the website, the app, or their data to harass anyone, to interfere with a device you do not own, or in violation of any law.

You may link to any page. You may quote short passages with attribution. The text, design, and images on this site are ours unless stated; the data files are made available under the licence noted in the app repository.

The Box and the waitlist

Joining the waitlist is not an order and is not a contract to buy. No payment is taken. Features, price, and availability described on this site are plans and may change or not ship at all. When the box is available for purchase, its own terms and warranty will apply.

The receipt shown on the website is an illustration of the kind of report the Box is designed to produce. The numbers on it are made up and say so.

No warranty, limited liability

The website and app are provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Glassback and the people who make it are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of the website, the app, or the information in them, even if advised of the possibility. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past twelve months and one hundred US dollars.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions. In those places the exclusions apply to the extent the law permits.

Governing law and changes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to conflict of law rules, and disputes will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Florida. Independent and unaffiliated

Glassback is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or otherwise connected to any television manufacturer, streaming platform, or advertising company, including LG, Samsung, Vizio, Roku, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Amazon, Apple, or Google, or any of their subsidiaries, including LG Ad Solutions and Alphonso.

Product illustrations on this site and in the app are generic renderings created for this project. They are not manufacturer photographs and do not depict any specific model. Photographs and video of people are staged productions; no real household was recorded.

Quotations attributed to companies or executives are their own public statements, reproduced under fair use for the purposes of comment and criticism, with the source and, where possible, the exact moment linked.

How verdicts are made

Each platform's verdict describes what the platform's software is documented or observed to do, not what any individual set is doing right now. Sources include manufacturer privacy policies and support pages, the United States Federal Trade Commission's 2017 action against Vizio, company statements to advertisers and investors, independent network testing published by researchers and journalists, and our own testing on hardware we own.

Confidence is stated per platform. High means multiple independent sources agree and we have confirmed the menu path on hardware. Medium means documented but not confirmed by us on hardware. Low means inferred from the platform family.

Corrections

If a menu path is wrong for your set, a name has changed, or you believe a verdict is unfair, write to hello@glassback.app with the model number, firmware version, and what you saw. Corrections are made promptly and the page notes the date of the last check.
